One of the best of the American death metal vanguard
to emerge in the early 90s, along with Morbid Angel, Deicide and Nile,
New York’s Suffocation performed extremely powerful music laced with
fairly graphic lyrics. Formed in 1990 by Frank Mullen (January 1970,
USA; vocals), Terrance Hobbs (guitar), Doug Cerrito (guitar), Josh
Barohn (bass) and Mike Smith (drums), Suffocation recorded a demo,
Reincremated, before releasing 1991’s Human Waste EP. They subsequently
negotiated a better contract with Roadrunner Records, debuting for the
label the same year with Effigy Of The Forgotten. Chris Richards
replaced Barohn on 1993’s Breeding The Spawn, while Doug Bohn was
brought in to fill the vacant drum position on 1995’s career high
Pierced From Within. ex-Malevolent Creation drummer Dave Culross (b. 9
March 1974, USA) joined the band on the final release of their original
incarnation, the 1998 EP Despise The Sun.
Suffocation’s
work remains among the most highly respected of any of the original
wave of death metal acts, and it was something of a shame that they
reunited in 2003 without Cerrito and Richards. With guitarist Guy
Marchais joining original members Mullen, Hobbs and Smith, the revived
outfit completed Souls To Deny for the Relapse label. Bass player Derek
Boyer was added to the line-up for subsequent albums, including a
self-released live set and a 2006 self-titled studio album.
